Donating stem cells is a good thing
A information session was held in Richmond, where the Chinese community was encouraged to donate stem cells. A group of Chinese immigrants teamed up with Canadian scientists in a process of getting non-English-speaking people to get aware of the benefits their receive if they donate stem cells.
“Many of the new Canadians coming here are not conversant as yet in English and it takes time for people to learn a new language, but it is important that we give them a chance to take part and be a part of the Canadian mosaic and be a part of the donor base,” said Tung Chan, the chairman of the Chinese immigrants.
It’s been explained to them that stem cells can cure a lot of diseases, and that donating stem cells can save other lives. Another interesting fact is that out of 500 patients which are seeking stem cell donors, 9 are Chinese and 30 are Asians.
