New retina treatment
Stem cells, Inc., a biotechnology company focused on development of therapeutics to treat CNS and liver diseases, has announced today that their HuCNS-SC(R) product, when transplanted into an animal model, can actually protect the retina from degeneration. HuCNS-SC(R) is a human neutral stem cell. Degeneration of retina can lead to blindness, so this discovery is very important.
The whole research was lead by Dr. Raymond Lund, professor at OHSU with his crew. “We are performing some preclinical studies already, so hopefully, we’ll be able to get a successful IND filing.” says Stephen Huhn, vice-president of Stem cells, Inc.
The team performed the research on an animal model with rentinal degeneration. Genetic mutation is to blame for the dysfunction of retinal pigmented cells. They have the role of photoreceptors. Since they’re broken, that leads to loss of vision. Scientists actually used HuCNS-SC(R) to replace the “broken” cells and ended up with amazing results.

The study will be presented to the public on November 1st in San Francisco.
