The first airway transplant ever
A group of doctors have successfully carried out a very complicated transplant procedure in which they transplanted a trachea which was grown partly from the patient’s own stem cells. They think that this procedure will change the future of surgery.
The patient was a young woman from Barcelona called Claudia Castillo, whose trachea got damaged due to tuberculosis.
Bristol University’s professor Birchall said that in the future it will be possible to create an organ and transplant it. He also said that this will be the most common type of surgical procedure.
